PAUL

Paul was born at home, Tudor Avenue, Cheshunt on 3rd May 1950. Another staircase vigil. He was a sturdy baby but didn't try to talk until he was three years old. Malcolm and Gay did his talking for him just like the entertainer Harry Hamsley's family, Elsie, Winnie and Johnny, on Pre-war radio. At a few days old he looked just like grandfather Stan Brown. We always had trouble with his diet and even today he has his little foibles. A few years ago he said something about an ulcer, which came as no surprise to me.

As a young child he was the comedian of the family, and as a teenager at Ipswich he followed Malcolm faithfully in all his misdeeds. A few days after Malcolm ran away on an adventure hitching lifts on lorries, Paul did the same thing and was brought home soaking wet from Wiltshire.

He was never intellectual, so we paid full school fees for him at St Joseph's College, which knocked some rough edges off and gave him a veneer of culture. He will make his way in life through buying and selling.

After St Joe's he worked on a large pig and poultry farm, and Marjorie has already related the tale of the runt pig which he brought home. When he married - far too young, and disastrously as we thought at the time, and were right - he moved to a tied cottage on another large farm near Colchester, and it was shortly after this that divorce number three arrived.

He joined a firm of contractors specialising in erection of grain silos and similar work, which took him away for days on end from the two babies, Shane and Mia, so he took on Pat as a paid housekeeper, and has since married her. Unfortunately Marjorie and I couldn't go to the wedding because of her state of health, although we had wanted to. Neither could Malcolm because of his broken leg, which is why we three are the only ones not on the wedding photograph.

Paul has his own contracting business now and should do well at it. I hope so.

Pat is just right for Paul and his family, which includes her own child Sarah, and Shelley who is theirs. She is having some difficulty at the present time with Shane and Mia because Paul's first wife who deserted them has suddenly reappeared from America and is causing trouble. Shane is old enough to stand on his own two feet, but Mia is very confused and unhappy.

Paul's second name is Stanislaus, the same as Grandfather Brown's and Stan's. It is a Saint's name - there is no overseas connection in the Brown family.
